Japanese households often keep frog crafts as charms for wealth, believing they encourage money to keep flowing back. For travelers and those on business trips, the frog carries an added wish: a safe journey home. It remains one of the most beloved wazakka (traditional Japanese lucky ornaments).

In China, the frog carries a different but equally auspicious meaning — one tied to the land and the harvest. As a natural predator of crop-damaging insects, the frog has long been seen as a guardian of a bountiful harvest and a peaceful, prosperous nation. The celebrated Song-dynasty poet Xin Qiji captured this bond in his famous line: "Amid the fragrance of rice blossoms, they speak of a bountiful year, as the chorus of frogs fills the air." This poetic image cemented the frog as a symbol of abundant harvests. Ancient communities also saw the frog's vitality — its full belly and prolific spawning — as an emblem of fertility and thriving life.
